With “American Idol” confetti barely done falling in our living rooms, another one of our favorite reality competition show begins! “So You Think You Can Dance” returned in full force this week by kicking off auditions in New York and Dallas.
Thousands of hopefuls lined up for a chance to impress Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and a special guest judge (Tyce Diorio in NY). They battled it out for a ticket to Vegas and, cash prize, and, of course, to be dubbed as “America’s Favorite Dancer”.
In addition to a new format, this season of SYTYCD is more competitive than ever! “If you put it in relations to a track runner, the fastest man alive every year, there’s always somebody that comes along and breaks that record,” Judge Mary Murphy told PopStop TV News exclusively at the Los Angeles auditions. “That is definitely happening this season, especially in the hip-hop genre.”
The veteran choreographer also recalled her most memorable moment on the show. “There was this little cat in Dallas,” Mary dished, “he so effected me [and] the whole audience, I couldn’t stop crying!”
Only if all the other talents are as competitive! Mary also admits that some kids “think they can dance”, while other hot mess moments happen because they want the air time.
So what is our friend Nigel Lythgoe looking for this season? “Uniqueness,” The producer extraordinaire replied. “We’ve seen Twitch. We don’t need another Twitch. You gotta be somebody else. And we always say to them ‘Don’t be anybody else other than yourself.’”
“Don’t show us your weaknesses. If you can’t speak French, don’t speak French.”
