Uh oh! Things are not looking good for Russian punk band Pussy Riot. The three members of the band have been sentenced to two years in prison for defaming Vladimir Putin.
Pussy Riot was found guilty of hooliganism. The members were charged after screaming “Mother Mary please drive Putin away” during a performance on the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral. Pussy Riot offended everyone present and showed a lack of respect for the Orthodox Church’s rules with their inappropriate clothing.
Protests are taking place today in over 60 cities around the world. The activists have named August 17 Pussy Riot Global Day. Protestors will wear Pussy Riot’s signature ski masks. Even Madonna got involved. Madonna performed last week during a Moscow concert wearing a Pussy Riot facemask and had the band’s name on her back. She said, “Everyone has the right to free speech, everywhere in the world. Maria, Katya, Nadia, I pray for you. They did something brave with their action. And I am praying for their freedom.”
