After announcing their engagement just last month, Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Gilmour are already a married couple! The two were wed in a private ceremony at Laie Hawaiian Temple of the Mormon Church in Oahu, Hawaii, on Saturday afternoon.
This must be some sort of wedding planning record! According to E! News, Elizabeth, 24, originally planned for a summer wedding, but bumped the date up two weeks ago so she could avoid media frenzy on her big day. Smart girl!
“Elizabeth##Q##s desire was for what most women want—to celebrate her nuptials in a private wedding with family and close friends,” Smart##Q##s rep revealed to E! News. “After the story broke about her engagement and the media became increasingly invasive, Elizabeth recognized it was going to be impossible to have a traditional wedding devoid of distractions and unusual challenges outside of her control. She decided, about a week ago, the best way to avoid significant distraction was to change her wedding plans and to get married in an unscheduled ceremony outside of Utah.”
Known for being kidnapped from her home in Utah, Smart frequently makes appearances to speak about child advocacy, and spoke at an event in South Carolina only days before she flew with her parents to Salt Lake City, Utah, then to Hawaii for to marry her boyfriend of a year, Gilmour, 22.
Mr. & Mrs. Matthew Gilmour are now set to head out on their honeymoon to a secret location! After the vacation, they plan on returning to Utah, and Elizabeth will continue her child advocacy work.
Best wishes to the happy couple!
