You’d think someone who directs movies with the help of tons of technology would also own a cell phone. Not Christopher Nolan. The director does not own a cell phone or an email address! Shocking! So how does he survive a world that’s so technology dependent?
Nolan says, “It’s not that I’m a Luddite and don’t like technology; I’ve just never been interested. When I moved to L.A. in 1997, nobody really had cell phones, and I just never went down that path. And I’m in a slightly unique position because when I’m working—and I’ve been working pretty much continuously for the last 10 years—I’m never more than five feet from somebody who has a phone.”
Apparently Nolan has been given a production phone for traveling but he has never cared to use it. He thinks that technology eats up time and pulls your concentration, and texting and email are ways to avoid communication.
Christopher Nolan isn’t the only director who doesn’t use email. Woody Allen told The Wall Street Journal, “I have two buttons [on my iPhone] I can touch—the weather and the Huffington Post.” Well, hopefully people can reach Allen on his cell!
