Following the recent events of the Colorado massacre, many people have become fed up with the lack of gun control in the United States. Prominent politicians and celebrities alike have voiced their opinions about the matter.
New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg released a statement, directing it at the presidential candidates, “Soothing words are nice. But maybe it’s time the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they’re going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country.”
Mitt Romney has signed bans on assault weapons, but apparently told the National Rifle Association that he would not pass gun control legislation if elected president.
The Aurora shooting at “The Dark Knight Rises” showing is just one of many in the US. The two most talked about shootings are the Columbine High School one in 1999, and Virginia Tech in 2007, making it the deadliest mass shooting in America after 2000.
Celebrities have tweeted their concerns about gun control in our nation.
Cory Monteith: “guns don’t kill people, people do etc.. but until we can fix society somehow you probably shouldn’t be able to buy AR-15’s at a fishing shop…such a senseless tragedy. When are we going to reconsider the role of guns in society? How many more times does this have to happen?”
Susan Surandon: “The right to bear arms was referring to muskets. Maybe it’s time to re-think our gun policy on this day of slaughter in Colorado.”
Miley Cyrus re-tweeted a message from one of her followers: “Less guns = less psychopaths who can get guns = less innocent lives lost…seems pretty obvious to me.”
Donald Trump had a different angle on the issue: “At least 12 dead and 50 wounded in Colorado-bring back fast trials & death penalty for mass murderers & terrorists.”
Other celebrities had a different take on gun control.
Chris Daughtry: “Stricter gun laws will not stop SICK people from getting access to guns…Laws & rules are not in the forefront of the mind of a criminal.”
