Is Ann Curry leaving the Today Show any time soon? The New York Times dropped a huge morning broadcast bomb yesterday when they reported that NBC is holding private meetings to determine Ann’s future.
Although Ann has been with the show for 15 years, she only stepped into the role of co-host in June 2011 after Meredith Vieira left. This spring was the first time in a long time when Good Morning America surpassed The Today Show in the ratings.
According to The New York Times, “The planning – which is taking place in secret and has not been finalized – is effectively an admission that all is not well at The Today Show, the show that invented morning television 60 years ago and has inspired countless lower-rated competitors since.”
Considering that the 55-year-old news veteran has encountered a number of obstacles at “Today”, the news of her possible departing from the show did not come as a surprise to many viewers. Critics zoomed in on the fact that Ann comes from hard news background and often lacks “chemistry” with Matt Lauer and various celebrity guests. Other fans complimented her on her serene demeanor and intelligence.
Ann’s “Today” co-host Matt Lauer is completely off the hot seat. He just re-signed his contract with the show.
Fans of Ann’s don’t have to worry about her future with the network – NBC executives are discussing a different assignment for Ann. Discussions are expected to be completed before the Olympics air on the network in July.
Do you think Ann should stay on “The Today Show”? If not, who do you think would be a good fit as her replacement?
