Gay Pride Month just ended in June, and Anderson Cooper has been saving the juiciest bit for last! In a long-anticipated announcement on Monday, the award-winning CNN journalist came out in an open letter to blogger Andrew Sullivan.
“The fact is, I’m gay,” the 45-year-old silver fox wrote. “Always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”
The conversation started when Andrew (who’s also gay), reached out to Anderson about “gay people in public life who come out in a much more restrained and matter-of-fact way than in the past.”
Anderson has been staying mum about his sexuality for the longest time. “I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life. Part of that has been for purely personal reasons… But I’ve also wanted to retain some privacy for professional reasons. Since I started as a reporter in war zones 20 years ago, I’ve often found myself in some very dangerous places. For my safety and the safety of those I work with, I try to blend in as much as possible, and prefer to stick to my job of telling other people’s stories, not my own.”
“Anderson Cooper Comes Out” immediately started trending on twitter, and here are a few hilarious ones:
@MrSugarpants1: Coincidence that Anderson Cooper comes out of the closet the same week Tom Cruise announces his divorce? I think not.
@MrWordsWorth: Andersoon Cooper comes out publicly, because if he did it on CNN, no one would notice.
@HSwindell: Anderson Cooper comes out of the glass closet. I can respect that.
