The 012 Olympics came to end last night, and the world said goodbye to another memorable Olympics as it watched the closing ceremony as one. The theme of this ceremony was, “A Symphony of British Music.” Organizers of the show said it was, “a celebration of all that’s good about London, British people, our music and our culture.”
The ceremony paid tribute to Britain’s greatest writers and literature, from William Shakespeare (“The Tempest” was recited by actor Timothy Spall) to Jane Austen, with taxi cabs covered in newspaper, celebrated British fashion with appearances by supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, added British humor with an appearance by Eric Idle, and kept the festivities running with British music from The Who to the Spice Girls.
Just like the opening ceremony, the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony was star-studded! Singer Emeli Sande kicked things off with her performance, followed by Timothy Spall dressed as Winston Churchill, reciting words from Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” Of course everyone sang along to Madness’ “Our House”! One Direction made an appearance singing their hit, “What Makes You Beautiful,” along with the Spice Girls singing “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life.” Even London mayor Boris Johnson was dancing along! Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, and Taio Cruz individually sang their hits before coming together for a rendition of the Bee Gee’ “You Should Be Dancing.” Russell Brand surprised everyone dressed as Willy Wonka and lip-synching to “I Am the Walrus.”
Rio showed the world what is to come in 2016 with appearances by model Allesandra Ambrosio and soccer star Pele. As the Olympic flame was extinguished, Take That took the stage and belted out “Rule the World,” while The Who brought the night to a close.
As the NBC Olympics commentator said, “The world is one for just one night.” The athletes of the 012 Olympics walked in as one and celebrated their achievements as one. It was truly a night to remember!
