17 days flew by fast! From an extravagant opening ceremony to Team USA ranking number one in medals (a total of 104, 46 gold!), the 012 Olympics was an unforgettable one. However, the Olympics have sadly come to an end today.
Here were some highlights:
-USA Swimming sweeping the medals! There was the amazing 800 meters race by Katie Ledecky, only 15-years-old, earning her first gold medal. Breakout stars Missy Franklin and Nathan Adrian stole our hearts with their winning personalities and their gold medals. We can’t forget about Michael Phelps, ending his Olympics career with 22 career Olympic medals.
-Who can forget about USA Women’s Gymnastics winning team gold? Or Gabby Douglas winning the all around gold medal? These five teen gymnasts wowed the world with their amazing skills on the floor, uneven bars, vault and beam.
-Jamaica’s Usain Bolt setting a world record and winning his third gold medal in the 4×100 relay, and the U.S. women’s 4×100 relay team setting a world record as well.
-The most popular sports watched: Team USA men and women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams winning gold!
-There were some firsts as well: first gold medal for the women’s water polo team, and Kayla Harrison won the first American gold in judo!
-We also loved the celebrities like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga tweeting throughout the Olympics, wishing the athletes congratulations. Samuel L. Jackson entertained us with us lively live tweets!
The 012 Olympics closed with a fun-filled closing ceremony. The Spice Girls spiced up the Olympics with their hits, One Direction performed as well alongside The Who, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, and more! The athletes were finally able to let loose and have fun, celebrating their wins! Only four years until Rio 2016…can YOU wait that long? What were some of YOUR favorite 2012 Olympics moments?
